Barcelona Couch Mies Van Der Rohe: the King of Comfort

The Barcelona couch by Mies Van Der Rohe is probably the most famous and bestselling creation by the German architect and designer in the furniture. It’s an unique object, with a unique style. The manufacture of this couch, following the original project by Mies Van Der Rohe, is very complicated, needing a careful heed for the particulars. The Barcelona couch is a winning and unique project because the design choices of Mies Van Der Rohe.

The final result of this project is an unique piece between the modern production of chairs: you can’t confront the Barcelona couch with the others contemporary and top class product. Created by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe for the German Pavilion at the 1929 Barcelona Exposition, the Barcelona couch features the pure compositional structure that now epitomizes Modern architecture.

From the hand-buffed frame to the individual leather squares carefully welted together, the Barcelona sofa is a tribute to traditional craftmanship and meticulous attention to detail. Being a couch designed for the king and queen of Spain, this sofa has to be royally for both style and comfort. And for both these features you can really say that the German architect and designer had a great success.

You can understand the essence of Barcelona couch only knowing the history of its designer: Ludwig Mies van der Rohe began his career working in his father's stonemasonry business. After an apprenticeship with furniture designer Bruno Paul in Berlin, he joined the office of architect Peter Behrens, whose work presaged the modern movement. In 1912, Mies established his own office in Berlin, and later became a member of the Deutscher Werkbund and Director of the Bauhaus.

He immigrated to the United States in 1938, setting up a practice in Chicago. His buildings include the German Pavilion for the 1929 Barcelona Exposition, the Tugendhat Villa in Brno, Czechoslovakia, the Seagram Building, designed with Philip Johnson, a cluster of residential towers along Chicago's Lakeshore Drive in Chicago, and the Illinois Institute of Technology campus, where he was the director of architecture.

Mies Van Der Rohe putted the principles of Modern architecture in the furniture design: every piece of furniture, also the Barcelona couch, need to be useful for the people before stylish and fine. So a chair or a sofa must be mainly comfortable and only on the second hand should be good looking. Furthermore Mies Van Der Rohe used in furniture modern materials, like steel, that was used only in architecture before: this is a great sign of innovation, a break with the tradition (particularly the Art Noveau).

The framework of the Barcelona couch is made in solid wood (in the models you can find on sale today normally), the cushion is comfortable and crafted in leather and is secured to the couch by leather straps. The four legs are made in steel, to give a solid base and a modern and elegant look to the Barcelona sofa.

If you choose the Barcelona sofa for your home or office, you will choose not only a piece of design history, but also a comfortable and modern sofa. Also you can choose between various colors, so it’s easy to find the model of Barcelona cushion that is relevant for your taste and style.
