Bed by Eileen Gray: The Style of Comfort

It’s not easy thinking a bed like an object of design: often the bed is located in the hidden zone of a house, and the function of this object is to give a comfortable relax. But the bed by Eileen gray overthrows this perspective. The Irish designer transformed this bed in a unique design object, without denaturalize its nature. Indeed the bed by Eileen gray has a unique style and refinement but it does not lose anything in comfort and softness.

The big mattress of the bed by Eileen gray, with a soft and elegant leather coating, represents an invitation to relax over it, to rest in the bed, like said the Irish designer. The Day Bed is rightly counted among the most famous designs by Eileen Gray. The lounge “offers pleasant and comfortable seating and is, moreover, particularly suited to relaxing.” What she in her own mo-desty conceals is the fact that the Day Bed is enchantingly beautiful, accessible from all sides and a pleasing sight from every perspective. It is the ideal showpiece to be placed freely in a spacious room.

Eileen Gray was on Scottish-Irish origin. She then discovered the workshop of D.charles, a painters who was specialized in lacquers. She worked with him and learned all that was necessary for that period of her professional career. In 1902 she went to Paris where she improved her design and oriental lacquer knowledge. She caught the attention of Jacques Doucet, the couturier, an art knower and collector, he entrusted her with the job of furnishing and decorating his new home. Her first big assignment was furnishing "Madame LÚvy" in Rue de Lota in Paris.

A long, illustrated article in a Dutch magazine, a new exhibition and the approval of Gropius, Mallet-Stevens and Le Corbusier encouraged Gray to take the step towards architecture. From the 50's on, her sight and hearing continued to diminish; however, she continued to invent new projects and to experiment with new materials.

The bed by Eileen gray is faithful to the rules of its creator: first of all the waiver to  every unnecessary decorations and the searching of an image that represents the function of the object. Following these rules the bed by Eileen gray does not betray its creator. Indeed the line of the bed is geometrical, made with a tubular steel that wraps and supports the bed. This framework is at the same time simple and elegant, with a masterly use of the materials and the lines, a typical characteristic of the Irish designer.

Thanks to this unique style the bed by Eileen gray became a unique and original piece in the history of modern design. Thanks to its linear style, this bed could be collocated in every ambient, without losing elegance and always giving a glimpse of style at every furniture. If you choose the bed by Eileen gray for your home or office, you will buy not only a comfortable bed but also a unique object, that will give elegance and style to your home or office.
