The Chaise Lounge LC4: the Relaxing Machine

The  chaise longue lc4 by Le Corbusier is the chaise long par excellence, an absolute icon of 1928: it was named the “relaxing machine”, because the reinterpretation of the classic chaise lounge by the Swiss designer and architect originate a chair that is a piece of modern design history. And this happens thanks to the unmistakable style of Le Corbusier and the technical  solutions used by the Swiss designer.

We must remember that the project of the chaise longue lc4 by Le Corbusier dates back to the early ’20s, before it was realized: the project was fully realized only in 1928, for the Autumn Shop in Paris. From this we can understand why Le Corbusier can be considered a pioneer in the ideas (that follow the Modern Movement) and in the availment of new materials for the furniture, like steel and leather.

Sifting through the archives of the Esprit Nouveau can you find an advertisement in a recliner called “The Surrepos” designed by Dr.Pascuad. Surely, Le Corbusier was directly inspired by this design. The Chaise Longue, however, was produced on a large scale only since 1929 by Thonet France.

We also should remember that Le Corbusier is widely considered one of the most influential architects of the 20th century and the Swiss designer and architect (his real name was Charles-Edouard Jeanneret) is credited with changing the face of urban architecture, bringing it into the technological age. Connecting architecture with revolution, his legacy demonstrates a strong, if utopian, sense of purpose to meet the needs of a democratic society dominated by the machine. “Modern life demands, and is waiting for, a new kind of plan, both for the house and the city.” he said in 1923.

The chaise lounge lc4 was realized in steel: a new material for the furniture, that was bound with the directions of Art Noveau: the furniture, particularly the chair, was made with standard materials, like wood, and followed the style of Art Noveau, with elaborate stylistic lines.

With the chaise lounge lc4 Le Corbusier beaked up with the artistic tradition, creating a beautiful object and, at the same time, an useful, comfortable and high-tech chair.    This is a chair with variable inclination that gives anyone there to sit on the impression of being rocked. The Chaise Longue is considered a paradigm of the work of three great masters of design: Le Corbusier, Jeanneret and Perriand.

Chaise Longue lc4 designed by Le Corbusier has a structure in chromed steel tube. It is completed by a thin mattress and a padded headrest cylindrical upholstered in leather. With its curved shape, able to oscillate, it follows easily the position of greater or lesser inclination of the body.

If you choose the chaise longue lc4 for your home and office, you will get not only a piece of design history, but also a very comfortable chair, that will rock your body thanks of the way it mirrors the body's natural curves while appearing to float above its supports. An infinite number of sitting angles are achievable with the LC4, as the moveable frame adjusts along the base, from upright to full recline.

If you want to relax with a unique style, the chaise lounge lc4 is the chair made for you
