Kubus Bauhaus Chair: a New Geometric Style

The kubus bauhaus chair, born from the inspiration and the technical ability of the Austrian architect and designer Josef Hoffmann, is in that set of furniture object that rightly entered in history of modern design. These objects find a common inspiration in the Bauhaus school: this school was one of the most important school in art, architecture and design not only in the Europe, but also all over the world.

The Bauhaus school operated in Germany in the first half of the last century, and was not only an art school but also a start point for all the artistic movement that innovated the world of architecture and design since 1920: and the kubus Bauhaus chair by Josef Hoffmann was one of most clear expression of these innovator pushes.

Two of Hoffmann's enduring furniture designs, the Hoffmann Kubus and Hoffmann Velvet chair have gone onto to be very popular into the 21st century. Hoffmann's ability to combine classic design principles to these modern pieces have made these pieces true modern classics.

This Josef Hoffmann Kubus Armchair was presented at the International Exhibition held in Buenos Aires in 1910 on the centennial of Argentinean Independence known as la Revolucion de Mayo. Josef Hoffmann had a preference for geometric composition based on the square that was later attributed his own formal language called "Quadratstil." This language was evident in everything Josef Hoffmann created both architecturally as well as his innovative furniture designs, including the famed Kubus Chair.

Indeed the kubus Bauhaus chair has many different stylistic characteristics that made this armchair an unique object, like unique and particular was the style of Josef Hoffmann, either in the field of architecture either in the design field. The Austrian designer loved geometrical shapes and was interested particularly in the cubic form: he used this shape in his design objects and also in the kubus Bauhaus chair (from this particular style derived the name “kubus” for the furniture objetcs projected and made by Josef Hoffmann).

Furthermore  the kubus Bauhaus chair got some characteristic that tied it to the boring movement of Modernism: for his creations Josef Hoffmann inspired to the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, one of the inspirational of Modernis. Particularly is notable the linearity and elegance of shapes, that broke  the tradition of the Art Noveau, with its voluptuous and rich shapes, and least but not last, the comfort and functionality of this chair.

The kubus Bauhaus chair express Josef Hoffmann's love for cubes and squares. This fluenced the whole development of this famous armchair. The ground frame is in solid beech wood as well as the legs with bras rolls. The padding is filled with shape-resistant rigid polyurethane foam. The  upholstery is in high quality leather.

If you choose the kubus bauhaus chair for your home or for your office, you will buy not only an elegant chair, a unique piece of history design with its geometrical shape, but also a solid and comfortable armchair, a really relaxing place to sit and rest.
