Lc2 by Le Corbusier: Inside Out

Is not easy to choose a sofa between the various styles and materials in the modern survey of furniture: but if you will be sure to choose an object that is at the same time classic and elegant, without a doubt  the sofa lc2 by le Corbusier is the best solution. The Swiss designer projected the sofa lc2 in 1928, and presented it at the “Salon D’Automne” in Paris, a year after (in 1929), meanwhile the industrial production of this sofa begun in 1930.

The sofa lc2 by le Corbusier perfectly realizes the design rules studied and supported by its creator: every object should represents its function. This rule is valid for the sofa lc2, with its essentials lines and the big space left to the seat, epitomizes the function of sitting and seating with comfort: this should be the function for a couch.

The lc2 by le corbusier sofa is part of a group of avant-garde furniture realised by Le Corbusier in collaboration with the designer Charlotte Perriand and his cousin Pierre Jeanneret. As with the other members of the LC collection the LC 2 sofa plays with different materials and with the ratio of lightness, monumentality and aesthetics which results from the strict, function-oriented appraisal of the subject.

Le Corbusier didn’t approve the construction method of sofa and armchair of the first three decade of 1900: this method was based on the construction of a solid wooden framework, inserted in the couch. Working this way, from outside you can see only the upholstery of the sofa. For the sofa lc2 by le Corbusier the Swiss designer projected a completely different and new solution.

The framework of the sofa lc2 is made in tubular steel: Le Corbusier often used the steel in his furniture components, and the framework of this sofa is completely outside. This framework can sustain two or three seats (it depends on the chosen model) without any internal framework. the Le Corbusier Sofa remains one of the most recognised pieces of furniture of the modern design.

This chair was part of the first modern furniture line to take the radical step of producing a chair with a visible frame, in order to embody the clean minimalism and industrial rationale of the International style.
Thanks to the ability of the Swiss designer the sofa lc2 by le Corbusier has a big solidity, despite the absence of any internal framework (but for a certain time it was inserted a wooden framework, to give a better support to the seat, but this solution was rapidly abandoned).

And this happens thanks to a masterly use of steel and a careful study of the shape of the external framework.
The big and soft cushions of the sofa lc2 are made with polyurethanematerial and in the original model covered with black leather: now you can find this sofa in various colors and different coatings. But if you choose the sofa lc2 by Le Corbusier for your home or office, you will find not only a big and comfortable couch, but also a piece of history furniture, with modern and unique lines.
