Leather MR Chaise: Steel and Leather

The various model of leather MR chaise by Mies Van Der Rohe represent one of the most interesting part in the production of the famous German designer and architect in the seat field: Mies Van Der Rohe concentrated his production of design furniture in the field of chair and armchair, and made various models, different for dimension and function. He projected and made classic chair, cantilever chair and armchair, like the Barcelona chair.

Even in the field of the chaise lounge he didn’t made a single model, but he made various model, with different characteristics, that should be adapt to various style of furniture.

Indeed the models of leather MR chaise are four, the base model, the adjustable model, the longer model without armrest and the longer model with armrest. Every single model of the leather MR chaise is characterized by the aim of Mies Van Der Rohe in that artistic and historical moment: made a revolution in the concept of furniture, inserting new forms that were elegant but at the same time sober and functional. For this canon Mies Van Der Rohe inspired himself to Modernism (Mies Van Der Rohe was one of the most famous exponent of this artistic movement in Europe).

Another aim of Mies Van Der Rohe was the utilization of new materials for the furniture: indeed the German designer in the realization of leather MR chaise focused his attention to the using of steel (the steel was used in the industrial world and tried to exit out of that world).
The origins of the bent-steel cantilevered chair are somewhat murky, but generally three names come up in the discussion. Marcel Breuer is widely credited with pioneering the exploration of the material, Mart Stam seems to be the first to conceive a “chair without back legs”, and Mies van der Rohe is remembered as the one who made it beautiful.
In attendance were Marcel Breuer and Mies van der Rohe, both of whom were inspired to design cantilever chairs of their own in the coming months.

Mies replaced the right angles on the front legs with a graceful curve which had the advantage of increasing elasticity while preventing material fatigue. Mies first showed the MR 10 and MR20 at the Stuttgart Weissenhof Estate — a seminal Werkbund exhibition, which first brought modernist works to the public, with buildings designed by Peter Behrens, Walter Gropius, Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe and others.

It is believed that Mart Stam described his idea—a continuous loop of steel (he used a thinner gauge gas pipe in the earliest versions) with a cantilevered seat—at a meeting of the Werkbund in 1926.

Now, if you choose one of the various model of the leather MR chaise for your home or office, you will find a solid chair (thanks to the tubular steel framework) with a high level of comfort (thanks to the leather padding). You can choose between various models and find the one that suits better to your personal taste and your furniture style.
