Sofa Eileen Gray: Lota and Day Bed for Relax

The sofa by Eileen Gray, also know as “Lota sofa”, along with the day bed, represents two very different styles, two artistic soul of the Irish designer. Indeed Eileen Gray was a polyhedral artist, an expert in  various courts: both models of Eileen Gray’s couch was made for the same house, the house of famous stylist Suzanne Talbot, that was in Paris, in rue Lota. For the first time in this house Eileen Gray was interested both in interior decoration, furniture and architectural choices.

Eileen Gray was an expert in interior decoration, thanks to her artistic training: indeed she was born to an aristocratic family in Enniscorthy, a small market town in south-eastern Ireland, and spent her childhood years there. As a young adult, in order to develop her artistic sensibilities, she entered the Slade School for Fine Arts in London and from there moved to Paris where she would spend most of her working life. Paris at the turn of the century was a creative mecca for visual and performance artists, writers, scientists and philosophers.

On a trip to London in 1905 Eileen wandered into a lacquer repair shop: a trip which was to change the course of her creative life. With new-found knowledge and some tools in hand, she returned to Paris, linked up with a master craftsman of lacquer, Sugiwara-san, and from there developed new furniture and assessory designs with striking colors and understated shapes. Her boredom with the flowing, leafy lines of the Art Nouveau movement led to an artistic vocabulary which was more closely related to the De Stijl movement: clean lines and simple forms.

And the two models of sofa by Eileen Gray represents in a clearly the evolution of this artist and the influences that featured her creations. In the first and for a long time Eileen Gray was only a painter and a drawer: her classical training in figurative arts naturally evolved in the practical art of interior decoration. Eileen Gray followed the Art Noveau in the interior decoration, choosing floral motifs for her works.

And the sofa by Eileen Gray is very close to the concept of luxury of the Art Noveau, because of its big and comfortable cushions and the framework made with a classic material like solid wood. The only notable innovation in represent by the wheels under the two box units on castors detachable from sofa ends.

Instead the day bed by Eileen Gray in more influenced by the Modern Movement: this artistic movement broke with the unnecessary frills and the decorations of Art Noveau, and directed to an usefully, simple and lean style for the furniture. First of all the furniture, like couch and day bed, has to be useful and comfortable, at only on the second hand it has to be elegant. And Eileen Gray for the day bed has choose modern materials, like steel and leather, instead of the classic wood framework.

If you choose one of the sofa by Eileen Gray, you will find an unique piece of history design for your home or office, and also a comfortable seat: the day bed can be easily and rapidly change in a bed, big and comfortable. Choose your model between the various combinations of colors and you will be happy with your new and good looking couch.
